When Is the Best Time to Visit Egypt? A Guide to Weather, Crowds and Prices

The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April, when daytime temperatures sit in the comfortable 20s °C, the nights are cool and the sun shines almost every day. That is the short answer, but it is not the whole story.

Egypt stretches from the Mediterranean coast to the Sudanese border, and a month that is perfect for the Pyramids of Giza can be punishing in Luxor or ideal for a Red Sea beach. Prices, crowds and festivals shift just as much as the thermometer.

This guide comes from the team at Egypto Tours, a licensed Egyptian tour operator. It walks through each season, each month and each major destination, so you can match your dates to what matters most to you: comfortable sightseeing, warm sea water, a quieter temple or a better price. By the end you will know when to go, what to expect and how to plan around the heat, the holidays and Ramadan.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt at a Glance

If you only read one section, read this one.

  • Best overall: October to April. Days are warm rather than hot, and Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are all comfortable for a full day of sightseeing.
  • Best balance of weather and crowds: November, February and March, when the heat is mild and the December and January rush has not started or has passed.
  • Busiest and most expensive: Christmas, New Year and the weeks around Easter. Book flights, hotels and Nile cruises well ahead for these dates.
  • Best for the Red Sea: April to June and September to November for warm water and manageable air temperatures, although you can swim all year.
  • Cheapest time: June to August, when the Nile Valley is extremely hot but prices drop and the temples are quiet.
  • Hardest weather: July and August in Luxor and Aswan, where daytime highs regularly pass 40°C.

Egypt Weather by Month: Temperatures, Crowds and Verdict

Egypt is a desert country with a Mediterranean fringe, so it barely rains south of Cairo and the sun is almost constant. The real variable is heat, and Upper Egypt runs several degrees hotter than Cairo all year. The table shows approximate long-term averages in degrees Celsius; individual days can be warmer or cooler.

Best Time to Visit Egypt by Season

Winter in Egypt (December to February)

Winter is Egypt’s peak season, and for good reason. Cairo days hover around 18–21°C, Luxor and Aswan are warm and dry, and the sun is gentle enough to explore temples all day. Nights in Cairo are cold, especially in Upper Egypt and the desert, so pack layers. It is the classic time for a Nile cruise, but the Christmas and New Year weeks are the most crowded and expensive of the year. For the same weather with fewer people, travel in late January or February.

Spring in Egypt (March to May)

Spring is a shoulder season with a steep temperature curve. March is lovely almost everywhere. By April, Luxor and Aswan approach the mid-30s°C, and by May they are properly hot. This is also khamsin season, when hot, dusty winds can blow for a day or two and cut visibility. Spring suits travelers who want lighter crowds and lower prices than winter, as long as they sightsee early in the morning.

Summer in Egypt (June to August)

Summer is hot, dry and quiet. Cairo reaches the mid-30s°C, while Luxor and Aswan regularly pass 40°C. Sightseeing is still possible if you start at sunrise, rest through the afternoon in an air-conditioned hotel or on a ship’s pool deck, and drink plenty of water. It is the cheapest time to visit Egypt and excellent for Red Sea diving and snorkeling. Alexandria fills with Egyptian holidaymakers, so book ahead there.

Autumn in Egypt (September to November)

September is still hot, but October and November are among the best months of the year. Temperatures fall into the high 20s and low 30s°C, the Red Sea is at its warmest and the Nile cruise season opens. November is our favorite month: the weather is pleasant, prices have not yet peaked and the crowds are smaller than in December.

How Hot Does Egypt Really Get? Planning Around the Heat

Egyptian heat is mostly dry, which makes 35°C feel more manageable than the same temperature in a humid climate. The exceptions are Alexandria and the Mediterranean coast in July and August, where humidity makes the air feel heavier. Whatever the month, the sun is strong and the shade is scarce at open-air sites, so a few habits make a big difference:

  • Start early: temples and pyramids are at their best in the first hours after opening, when light is soft and the air is cooler.
  • Protect yourself: wear a hat and sunglasses, and use high-SPF sunscreen even in winter, because UV levels stay high.
  • Drink often: carry a refillable bottle and drink before you feel thirsty, especially from May to September.
  • Plan a midday break: use the hottest hours for lunch, a museum or a rest at your hotel or on the ship.
  • Choose air-conditioned transport: a private vehicle or a cruise ship with air conditioning makes summer travel far easier.

Best Time to Visit Egypt by Destination

Egypt’s regions have very different climates, so the best time depends on where you are going.

Cairo and Giza

Cairo works almost all year because most sightseeing happens in short stretches between air-conditioned vehicles. It is most comfortable from October to April. In summer, visit the Pyramids, Sakkara and the Grand Egyptian Museum early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and keep the middle of the day for museums and lunch.

Luxor and Aswan

Upper Egypt is the reason timing matters. The Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Hatshepsut Temple have little shade, and tomb interiors get hot and stuffy. November to March is ideal. From May to September, expect 40°C and above, and reach the West Bank at opening time. Winter nights can fall to around 5–8°C, so bring a jacket if you plan a sunrise balloon flight.

Nile cruises

The best time for a Nile cruise is October to April. River breezes, shaded decks and evening sailing make it comfortable, and every ship runs its full schedule. Late October to November and February to March give the best balance, while the Christmas and New Year sailings sell out first. Summer cruises cost less and the ships are fully air-conditioned, but shore visits take place in strong heat, so excursions start very early.

All of our Egypt Nile cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan in 3 to 5 nights, in either direction. You can compare standard Nile cruises for value, deluxe Nile cruises for better cabins and dining, and luxury Nile cruises for suites and fine dining, or choose a dahabiya Nile cruise for a small, quiet sailing yacht.

Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel is best from October to April. Twice a year, around 22 February and 22 October, sunlight reaches the inner sanctuary of the Great Temple of Ramses II. It is a long journey from Aswan by road, so early starts are essential, especially in summer.

Alexandria and the Mediterranean coast

Alexandria has a milder Mediterranean climate than the south. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant. Winter is cooler and rainier, and it receives most of Egypt’s rain, while July and August are humid and crowded with domestic visitors.

The Red Sea: Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and Marsa Alam

The Red Sea has sunshine all year and a drier heat than the Nile Valley. Sea temperatures are around 21–22°C in February and reach 28–29°C in August. For swimming in comfortable air, April to June and September to November are ideal. In winter the days are pleasant, though many divers want a wetsuit. Our Red Sea holidays combine beach days with temples, so you can pair a Nile cruise with sea time.

Siwa Oasis and the White Desert

Desert trips are best from October to April. Days are warm, but winter nights in the White Desert can approach freezing, so camping needs proper bedding. Avoid deep-desert trips in summer.

Best Time to Visit Egypt by Travel Style

  • History and sightseeing: November to March, when temples, tombs and open-air sites are comfortable all day.
  • Honeymoon: October, November, March and April for warm days and romantic evenings, with a Red Sea finish. See our Egypt honeymoon packages.
  • Family trips: February to April and October to November for manageable heat. In summer, keep a beach resort or air-conditioned pace.
  • Budget travel: June to September has the lowest prices. For a compromise, choose early November or the weeks outside school holidays in February and March.
  • Diving and beaches: year-round, with the warmest water in late summer and autumn.
  • Photography: sunrise and sunset light is the best in every season, and winter and spring give comfortable long days at the temples.

High Season, Low Season and the Cheapest Time to Visit Egypt

High season runs from October to April and peaks from mid-December to early January and again around Easter. During those weeks hotel and cruise rates are highest, popular tours sell out, and sites such as the Pyramids and Karnak are busiest between about 9 and 11 a.m.

Low season runs from May to September. Prices are noticeably lower and the temples are quiet, but you pay in heat.

The smartest compromise is a shoulder month: October, November, February or March outside holiday weeks. You get good weather, fewer crowds and better availability.

A few habits help in any month:

  • Book Nile cruises and Cairo hotels several months ahead for December and January.
  • Start sightseeing at opening time to beat both the heat and the tour buses.
  • Ask about shoulder-season rates when you request a quote.

Festivals and Events That Affect Your Dates

  • Christmas and New Year: the busiest weeks of the year. Coptic Christmas is celebrated on 7 January, so some Christian sites and churches have special services then.
  • Abu Simbel Sun Festival: around 22 February and 22 October, when sunlight reaches the temple’s inner sanctuary.
  • Ramadan: it moves about 10 or 11 days earlier each year. In 2027 it is expected to run from roughly 8 February to 9 March, with exact dates set by moon sighting. Sites and tours still operate and evenings have a special atmosphere, but some opening hours shorten, some restaurants close until sunset, and you should avoid eating or drinking in public where people are fasting. Eid al-Fitr follows, with busy domestic travel.
  • Easter and spring holidays: short busy periods for sites, hotels and flights.

Egypt Month by Month

  • Egypt in January : The coldest month, with cool nights and peak crowds. Ideal for sightseeing and Nile cruises, so book early.
  • Egypt in February : Warm, sunny days and fewer people than January. The Abu Simbel Sun Festival falls on 22 February, and Ramadan begins in 2027.
  • Egypt in March : Comfortable across the country, with occasional khamsin winds and rising temperatures in the south by the end of the month.
  • Egypt in April : Hot in Upper Egypt, around the mid-30s°C, and pleasant on the coast. Easter brings short busy spells.
  • Egypt in May : Hot inland, but crowds and prices are low, and the Red Sea is excellent.
  • Egypt in June : Very hot inland. Choose beaches, early morning sightseeing and air-conditioned transport.
  • Egypt in July : The peak of the heat. Best for the Red Sea and Alexandria, or for travelers who tolerate heat well.
  • Egypt in August : Similar to July, with the warmest sea temperatures and humid days on the Mediterranean coast.
  • Egypt in September : Still hot but easing, with low prices and perfect Red Sea conditions.
  • Egypt in October : The Nile cruise season opens, weather turns comfortable, and the Sun Festival takes place on 22 October.
  • Egypt in November : Arguably the sweet spot: pleasant weather, lively sites and smaller crowds than December.
  • Egypt in December : Cool and festive, but busy. Book early for Christmas and New Year.

What to Pack for Egypt by Season

  • Winter: layers, a warm jacket for nights and sunrise trips, and closed walking shoes.
  • Spring and autumn: light layers, a sun hat, sunglasses and a scarf for dust.
  • Summer: loose, breathable cotton or linen, a wide-brim hat, high-SPF sunscreen and a reusable water bottle.
  • All year: modest clothing covering shoulders and knees for mosques and local areas, comfortable walking shoes, and a plug adapter for Type C and F sockets (220 V).
